Racks
just before somebody complains – please read the “Aware” bit! Cheers!!!

Okay, the decision fell last night as in 24th to 25th February 2008: I bought a Tubus Cargo Rack.
I had another look at the TorTec Expedition Alloy Rear Rack, which would have been much cheaper but! As I am going to use this rack for moving and sometimes transporting heavier stuff (and I know myself… heavy means actually indeed heavy… some genetic defect of mine) – having an unsuitable rack just brings pains. Although, even if my bicycle says goodbye at some point – I can take the rack off and put it on the new one – so no waste. What I need is something that reliably takes on 40kg without wobbling and random other nuisances. How about the price??? I got it on offer… (10 GBP less). Still mental and double the price of the above but my calculation went so: Take the TorTec, be on the road – it makes crack – the bags come down – This would be: loss of the rack, some damage to the bags & the bike, and clear damage to whatever is in the bags. Hence, need to buy a new rack… and perhaps some items that broke – I have lost stuff through breakage when moving before & it is never pretty. I was already thinking to rope things together and support the rack by binding it via the rope to the front part of the bicycle but the things might get a bit out of hand… The Tubus sounds like it’s going to be with me for quite a while, independent what I am up to and that should be an argument enough for my late night shopping ;o). [I can't believe, I am defending myself for an excellent buy... aaaaaah]

Tubus:
Tubus are the manufacturers of high-quality racks for bicycles. Some say they make the best racks available. Bikers with the highest requirements in terms of equipment use Tubus products, worlwide – for 17 years..

It’s a bit frustrating… they praise the Blackburn Expedition 1 + Rear Rack as their strongest rack, designed for heavy duty touring and use with a Rhode Gear Child Seat. – what does this tell me… nothing… heavy duty touring can mean different things by different companies – so relative phrasing… and use with a Rhode Gear Child Seat… does this resemble an elephant carrier… I haven’t a clue… some weight indication would be great…
So, I have contacted Blackburn and Wiggle… and wait… have some tea in the meantime, with Jasmine & Vanilla (just for the detail of it)… and wonder what my bicycle is going to say, once I have completely disfigured it from a beautiful hybrid into an unrecognisable pseudo touring bike… hopefully, it will not mind…
Just to follow up the Blackburn story – I still haven’t heard back from them… their customer care doesn’t seem to care particularly. The first e-mail said that their server went down or so and had a bit of a mess up, which is fine but then… still no answer, not even to a reminder e-mail. If the company works like this – then I may assume that the product might be of similar quality … which does not make it a seller for me. I had a look around the internet and seemingly a few people had some issues with the given rack including breakage. So, the description to be the “strongest rack, designed for heavy duty touring and use with a Rhode Gear Child Seat” does seem to be a bit flawed and also clearly unreliable. So – a clear No No to me!
another follow up on the Blackburn story, which there is their response:
>The max weight limit is 40 pounds (US).<
Now, this would be 18.1 Kilos…
